Sunday Sessions: You Never Know What Someone Is Carrying

Sunday Sessions: You Never Know What Someone Is Carrying
We see such a tiny piece of other people's lives.
The person who didn't smile back.
The coworker who seemed unusually quiet.
The cashier who wasn't particularly friendly.
The friend who hasn't returned your text.
The person who cut you off in traffic.
The stranger who seemed impatient.
It's incredibly easy to take those moments personally.
But here's something I've been trying to remind myself:
You never know what someone is carrying.
Maybe they're grieving.
Maybe they're worried about someone they love.
Maybe they haven't slept.
Maybe they're struggling financially.
Maybe they're waiting for test results.
Maybe their relationship is falling apart.
Maybe they're overwhelmed, lonely, scared, or simply having one of those days when getting through the day is enough.
Or maybe they're dealing with something they haven't told a single person.
We See the Behavior. We Don't See the Story.
That's the part I keep coming back to.
We experience someone's behavior for 30 seconds and sometimes create an entire story about who they are.
They're rude.
They're inconsiderate.
They don't care.
What's their problem?
But what if we changed the question?
Instead of asking "What's wrong with them?"
What if we thought:
"I wonder what they're carrying today."
That tiny shift doesn't excuse genuinely hurtful behavior. Having compassion doesn't mean allowing people to treat us poorly.
It simply means recognizing that we're all human beings walking around with invisible backpacks filled with things other people cannot see.
Some days, ours is light.
Some days, it's incredibly heavy.
Give People a Little More Grace
We talk so much about protecting our energy, and I believe deeply in that.
But protecting our energy doesn't have to mean hardening ourselves toward other people.
Sometimes protecting our peace means deciding not to take everything personally.
Maybe the unanswered text isn't about you.
Maybe someone's bad mood isn't yours to fix.
Maybe the stranger who was short with you doesn't need your anger added to whatever they're already carrying.
Sometimes we can simply think:
"I don't know what they're going through, so I'm going to give them a little grace." And move forward.
And Remember This Goes Both Ways
Because someday, you will be the person carrying something.
You might be distracted.
You might not be your usual self.
You might cancel plans.
You might forget something.
You might not have the energy to explain why you're quieter than usual.
And on that day, you'll hope the people around you give you the same grace.
That's what makes compassion so powerful.
We don't need to know someone's entire story to treat them gently.
This Week'sSunday Sessions Challenge
When someone frustrates you this week, before reacting, try one simple thought:
"I don't know what they're carrying today."
Then give yourself a few seconds before deciding how much of your energy the situation deserves.
You may still need to speak up.
You may still need a boundary.
You may still decide someone's behavior isn't okay.
But perhaps you'll respond from a place of understanding rather than assumption.
Because everyone you meet is carrying something.
And sometimes the kindest thing we can do is make sure we don't make it heavier.
Your Affirmations for theWeek
Monday: I choose curiosity before judgment.
Tuesday: I don't have to take everything personally.
Wednesday: I can protect my peace and still lead with compassion.
Thursday: I give others the grace I hope to receive.
Friday: I remember that every person has a story I cannot see.
Saturday: I release the need to understand everything about someone else's behavior.
Sunday: I move through the world with a little more patience, kindness, and grace.
You never know what someone is carrying. Be the person who makes it a little lighter.
Wishing you a beautiful, gentle week ahead.
With all our love and gratitude,
David & Marc
